Did you know that?

Every once in awhile I come across interesting facts and information, then I take upon myself to share these items with the faithful readers of the Daily News in hopes of enlightening and expanding the boundaries of everyday life.

Here are just of few interesting things I’ve come across:

  • Butterflies were originally called flutterbys. Sounds kind of strange, “Oh, look at that beautiful flutterby.” Let’s be glad it was changed to butterfly.

  • A man named Charles Osborne had the hiccups for 69 years! Are you kidding me? He must have been single or divorced for sure. No joke.

  • Fortune cookies were actually invented in America, in 1918, by Charles Jung. Maybe they should be served at all American restaurants and not just Chinese restaurants.

  • There are more plastic flamingos in the U.S. than real ones. Why doesn’t this surprise me? Gotta love a good plastic flamingo.

  • More Monopoly money is printed in a year, than real money printed throughout the world. Cool, looks like Monopoly is an international sensation.

  • Each person uses approximately 57 sheets of toilet paper each day. Do we dare ask where they got this information? Where do they do this kind of research?

  • One gallon of used motor oil can ruin approximately one million gallons of fresh water. Imagine what the Exxon Valdez did to the coast of Alaska.

  • A sneeze travels out of your mouth at over 100 mph! That’s pretty intense. Easy to see how colds can be spread so quickly.

  • Dolphins sleep with one eye open. Looks like we won’t be sneaking up on any dolphins while they are sleeping.

  • During your lifetime, you’ll eat about 60,000 pounds of food. If that seems like a lot of food, it is. That’s the weight of about six elephants.

  • The oldest piece of chewing gum is more than 9,000 years old. I can only imagine that they probably found this under a 9,000 year old desk.

  • More money is spent on gardening than on any other hobby. A second reason to call a nursery a greenhouse.

I am running out of space in this column so I must leave you with this final tidbit.

The average person laughs 13 times per day. Hopefully after reading this column we can make it 14 times for the day.
